On August 1st, most colleges and universities in the US opened their applications to rising high school seniors. This may be a stressful time for both students and parents alike. While there are bound to be many questions about the process, it is important to keep a level head, take a deep breath and be as supportive as possible. Below are the top five questions that I am often asked as an educational consultant by families. The answers are designed to help you navigate through the college application process successfully:
1. What do admissions officers look for in a personal statement?
The most important part of writing any college essay is for students to provide the reader insight into who he/she is as an individual, which may not be obvious in a transcript or on test scores. Additionally, he/she should demonstrate strong writing skills and incorporate clear and succinct sentences.
2. How important are extracurricular activities?
While most colleges emphasize the importance of a student’s high school record above outside activities, substantial talent is often sought after by higher institutions. In addition, colleges prefer to see a student’s depth of involvement in a specific activity over the number of activities he/she joins. This is often referred to as “depth over breadth.”
3. To how many schools should a student apply?
Applying to schools can be time consuming and costly, therefore it is important to only apply to colleges that student, parents and counselors agree will be a good academic, social and economic fit.
4. How important are standardized tests in the application process?
More schools are offering test-optional and test-flexible programs. This allows a student to decide whether or not they want his/her scores will be considered in the admission decision.
5. Who should write an applicant’s letter of recommendation (LOR)?
Many schools require that the student’s counselor submit a LOR on his/her behalf. However, it is also helpful to have an academic teacher (perhaps in a student’s field of study) write an additional LOR that outlines the candidate’s strengths and provide an insight into what differentiates him/her from other applicants.
